Rex King
Coach King was raised in Inver Grove Heights and graduated from Simley High School. He played center and linebacker for the Spartans, and, in doing so, earned a scholarship to play college football at North Dakota State College of Science. He's been a coach at Simley for the past nine years as both a football and a shot put and discus coach for the track and field team. Since making coaching a full-time pursuit, Coach King has decided to further his education and finish his teaching license in special education while he works as a paraprofessional in Simley's special education department.
"I believe football is more than teaching young men how to play a game, it's about teaching them to be better members of society. This is part of what drives me as a coach to work hand-in-hand with players as both a teacher and a mentor so that these young men can become great men all while playing competitive football."
Coach Jonker
Coach Jonker was raised in Inver Grove Heights and graduated from Simley High School. He played football for the Spartans and went on to play for Augsburg College where he was not only a starter his freshman and sophomore year but also a member of both the Dean's scholar and Dean's list. While he transferred to Gustavus Adolphus College for his final two years of school, he remained a starter and was named a captain his senior year when he lead the team in sacks and tackles for loss. Coach Jonker has been a defensive assistant for Gustavus Adolphus' JV football team and the strength and conditioning coach at Simley from 2006-2010 while he finishes his degree in health and exercise science.
"Football is the greatest game on earth. Not because of its violent nature or the toughness it demands, but rather for what it offers to its players. I want to coach players who share the same passion and respect for the game that I do, who are selfless and willing to do anything for the betterment of their team, and who are willing to put in the work to be successful, because nothing on or off the field comes without working for it."
Phillip Peek
Coach Peek was born and raised in San Juan Capistrano, California. His football career began at Laguna Hills High School before he enrolled at Grossmont Junior-College in San Diego where he soon earned a scholarship to play defensive end at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. During his final two years at UMD he started all 23 games and led the defensive line in sacks and tackles for loss. After graduating he played some arena football, and in 2009 and 2010 he took a group of Simley middle school boys to back-to-back undefeated seasons.
"I believe games are won not only from practicing like you play, but also in the weight room and most importantly the classroom. Football's a luxury, not a privilege. I want to coach relentless and tenacious players who earn the right to join their teammates for 60 minutes every Friday night."
Chris Mensen
Coach Mensen was raised in Solon, Iowa and was a four-sport athlete, which included football, for the Solon Spartans. His football career continued at the University of Minnesota where he was named Academic All-BigTen in 2008 and 2009. Coach Mensen currently works as a paraprofessional and is working towards his teaching license in high school science. Prior to the 2010 season, when he helped coach the Spartans' offensive line, he was the head football and basketball coach at Vessey Leadership Academy in West St Paul where he lead the football team to its first victory in the program's history.
"I believe football is a game of toughness and hard work. We will win games by out working our opponents every day. I hold a high standard for my players and will push you to reach your full potential not only as an athlete but as a young man. I don't demand perfection, but I do demand that you never be satisfied."
Ryan Prail
Coach Prail was raised in Inver Grove Heights and graduated from Simley High School where he played quarterback for the Spartans. His work on the football field and in the classroom earned him both the Spartan Pride award and the BEST Foundation and IGH Football Boosters' scholarship, which he used to attend St. Cloud State University and be named to the Deans List his senior year. Now working as a Inver Grove Heights police officer, Coach Prail is currently assigned as the school resource officer for District 199. While this is his first coaching position, he's excited to be a part of Simley football once again.
"I believe football is the most exciting team sport to participate in. There are life lessons that can only be learned on the field. I'm looking forward to coaching students who will work hard and put in the time that's necessary to be successful."
